START NOW!

It’s that time of year again!  Resolutions, resolutions! We all make ‘em, don’t we?  You’ve heard the old adage, “All dressed up and no place to go.”  Well, if you’re like most of us, we dress up in resolutions on January 1st, then go nowhere with them.

Oh, Lord, You know my wicked ways,
my penchant to do wrong.
I pray that You would help me out,
and make these wrong ways gone.

God said, “Start now.”

Oh, Lord, You know my feeble heart,
self-centered thoughts and deeds.
I want my mind to straighten up,
to think on others’ needs.

And God said, “Start now.”

But Lord, You know it takes some time
to change habits like these.
Let’s take this ‘change thing’ slowly now,
surely You’ll agree.

But God said, “Start now.”

No, wait, Lord, please! Let’s not be rash.
It takes time to kick sin!
Baby steps, remember those?
No use to rush right in!

But God said, “Start now.”

Ease me into Your changes, Lord,
You know my tender psyche.
This church thing? I know I should go,
but really, every Sunday?!

And God said, “Start now.”

Who’s this you’re sending to my door
to interrupt my rest?
A man in need of food and clothes?
Next week I’ll give my best.

But God said, “Start now.”

I know that I should read Your Word.
Every page is holy.
But Lord, it’s such a great big book!
And I’m so slow and pokey.

And God said, “Start now.”

It says here, Lord, to give a tenth.
That can’t be what it means.
If I did that, I’d sure go broke!
Makes no good sense to me!

But God said, “Start now.”

I know I’m smart in several ways.
My talents aim to please,
but Lord, don’t ask me to give up
my time for ministry.

Still God said, “Start now.”

Dear Lord, You sure surprise me now.
I always pictured You
as One Who spoke with many words
instead of only two.

I thought that You would spend more time
to help me see the light.
Instead You seem so firmly fixed
on making me do right.

I’ll now accept Your schedule Lord,
although it’s mighty tight.
I’ll try to make each moment Yours,
and walk by faith not sight.

So God said, “Start now.”

“…begin to possess, that thou mayest inherit….” Deuteronomy 2:31

About Linda Watson Owen

Linda Watson Owen’s poetry is a delight for readers of all ages.  Her writing offers a variety of themes and styles in poems that both entertain and inspire. As a pastor’s wife and former educator, she finds her own inspiration in life’s many blessings and challenges.  Linda says, “It’s such a privilege to experience God’s unfailing love and presence in my own  life as well as through the lives of my family, friends, and readers. I always marvel at our Lord’s gracious goodness and constant loving care.  He has led and blessed me in so many ways, and I hope to honor Him by blessing others through the gifts He has entrusted to me.  I sincerely hope and pray that the words I write, the words the Lord has planted in my mind, will speak to others hearts as they have my own.  May the Light of His Love and great Salvation be the true passion of all our hearts, and the purpose in all of our days.”  You are invited to visit her weekly column in the Poetry Corner at Ezraweb.com .

One Response to “START NOW!”

  1. Mariane says:

Linda, there is so much depth to your poem I hardly know where to start. I guess I should “Start now!” **grin*

I’ve never seen it put quite like this but you’re spot on with your answer from God to those of us who want to wait to start our diets. “No. Start now!” This is a great lesson to me because I’ve made procrastinating into a fine art. It will be a long time before I forget this extraordinary poem and how much it applies to me. Thank you, dear friend! God bless! I love you dearly. Mariane
