(For Remembrance Day 11th November )
Goodbye Old Soldiers
Sound a fond Farewell
To the last living reminders
Of the War to end All Wars
We watched as time slowly aged you
Frail limbs, stiffening bones
Fingers gnarled and twisted
How you stooped down low
To lay the Red Poppies
In honour of the fallen
As year followed year, followed year
Dear old soldiers
Your eyes growing cloudy
But they still filled anew with tears
As in quavering voices
You told again the tales
Again and again and again
Of those who would always remain young
Those men, those friends those comrades
For whom time had stopped
Fallen on the field of glory
In mud and grime and ignominy
Now the last soldiers have gone
But all the words you have spoken
Will remain with us
As we see new wars upon wars upon wars
Now on dusty dry plains
Barren
As the mud of Flanders
Farewell Old Soldiers
At last your memories
Can be soothed and smoothed
The trauma erased
Made as clean, fresh and new
As the crisp white sheets
Those now cover you
May you now
At last
Rest in Peace
