Quite a few years ago, while living in Atlanta, I wrote down the words to this song. As I can not play an instrument or sing well, it has remained as a poem. If anyone would like to place the tune and make this a song, I would be pleased to no end.
*****************************
I Have No Tinsel
Joseph led the way into Bethlehem that day.
Mary was tired, they had traveled a long way.
Evening coming on, they couldn’t find a place to sleep.
And in a cold dark stable, Mary began to weep.
There was no tinsel, to sparkle on the walls.
No big red sleigh to hang, jingle bells upon.
No green young tree done up, in ornaments and bows.
The only light, to shine that night, in the town of Bethlehem,
The light of life is Jesus, and in a manger He was laid.
It was a cold night for the shepherds, flocks in the fields.
Stars brightly shining, and a silence you could feel.
An angle appeared before them, bringing words of hope.
Born to then, the King of Kings, down in Bethlehem.
There was no tinsel, to sparkle on the walls.
No big red sleigh to hang, jingle bells upon.
No green young tree done up, in ornaments and bows.
The only light, to shine that night, in the town of Bethlehem,
The light of life is Jesus, and in a manger He was laid.
(spoken softly)
Imagine yourself as a shepherd, standing watch over the flocks.
The night has come upon you, and it is quiet and getting cool. There are several others there with you, as the people were brought together, for the census that was called. One of the others has built a fire, small, there among the rocks, on the hill outside of town.
Can you see it there, in your heart, the shepherds gathered round a fire. So quiet, and calm, and cool. One of you take out an instrument, a soft song to play down low. Then a light appears over the city, a star shining soft and bright. You fall to the ground in fear, as an angel, a holy messenger of God, stands before you, lowly shepherds. He tells of a child born, a great and mighty King, then many more appear in the heavens, singing praise to the Child and God.
Then there is silence…
There you are gathered together, by the fire, yet shaking in fear. One by one, you start talking, speaking your thoughts out loud.
“Is it true?”
“Could it be?”
“The Messiah,” some one whispers.
Some of you decide to go into town and see. One by one you check each Inn, but nothing is found. Then, on the edge of town, it is a small Inn, built on the hillside, with a small stable of sorts, cut into the hollow of a hillside cleft.
There you find a young couple, resting in the straw at the back of the stable. A lantern, hanging from a stall’s post, casting a very dim light. The young mother, not more than a child herself, tenderly holding a babe in her weary arms.
The silence grows, no lowing of cattle, or the bleating of sheep, even the wind has calmed. It seems as though the very heavens had fallen silent, as the Child lay sleeping in peace. In the stillness, the words of God’s messenger come back to you:
“Fear not, for, behold, I bring you tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day, in the city of David, a Savior, which is Christ the Lord,”
Fearing to speak, you bow to one knee. Silently, in your heart, you know… This is that child spoken of by the prophets. Heralded and praised by angels…
This…this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard, and angels sing.”
(back to singing)
It was an icy night in Georgia, living on the streets.
Couldn’t make a camp fire, there among the weeds.
I cried aloud, for all to hear, hungry and weak.
A little hope within my heart, and warmth for my feet.
Lord I have no tinsel, to sparkle on the walls.
No big red sleigh to hang, jingle bells upon.
No green young tree, done up, in ornaments and bows.
The only light, to shine that night, in that cold Georgia town,
The light of life was Jesus, and in my heart He was raised.
Lord except this gift I give, on this Christmas day,
My heart, my soul, my every thing, at Your alter is laid.
You are my Lord, my shining King, savior of my soul….
You came to me, as a child, that in a manger was laid.
There was no tinsel, to sparkle on the walls.
No big red sleight to hang, jingle bells upon.
No green young tree, done up, in ornaments and bows.
The only light, to shine that night, in the town of Bethlehem….
The light of life is Jesus… yes the light of life is Jesus….
and in a manger He was laid.
About JesusPuppy
Born in Kansas, with only basic education and learning, Ed Pennewell sought a Godly life in the world, and from the sorrow there, has placed his thoughts to written words. Taking the name JesusPuppy while in the mission field, his greatest goal in life has been to show God’s love and light to all he meets. He places his heart in the things he writes, in hopes they touch an other’s life and bring them hope. JesusPuppy is a simple man, working as a carpenter while writing praise to the Lord, living on the Northwest coast of United States of America.
