OBEDIENCE IS THE KEY

Many times in our Christian walk, we get
lost. We may feel like we’re doing the right things, but after some time
we realize that somewhere along the way, we missed God’s directions and don’t
know how we ended up where we are. And like the proverbial husband, we
want to try to figure it out ourselves instead of asking for directions.

I’ve been down the wrong road more than once in my walk with Christ, and it can
be discouraging and frustrating to think you we’re doing well, only to see that
God appears to be distant in your life. The key that I’ve found to
getting back on track with God is to obey Him.

It seems like a simple enough answer, but often, the lack of faithful obedience
to God’s commands is what keeps us from experiencing His blessings. We
can study the Bible and even agree with what we hear from God, but we must obey
by putting into practice what we are told. “Do not merely listen to the
word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what
it says. Anyone who listens to the word
but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror
and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks
like. But the man who looks intently
into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not
forgetting what he has heard, but doing it he will be blessed in what he does.”
(James 1:22-25)

Obedience to God’s commands is essential if we want to experience God’s
blessings. Even more importantly, our obedience is a direct statement of
our love for God. As the apostle John wrote: “Jesus replied, “If
anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will
come to him and make our home with him.” (John 14:23). Our goal in this
life is to increase our knowledge of and intimacy with God. We can only
truly show our love for God and have intimacy with Him by being obedient to His
commands.

So how does one become obedient to God? First, it is accomplished by
faith. We must believe wholeheartedly in God’s goodness, unparalleled
wisdom, awesome power and complete love for us. Second, we must learn His
commands by studying His word, especially the commands of Jesus as written in
the gospels of the New Testament. Third, we must seek our heavenly Father
in prayer and respond as He directs us. As James 1:5 tells us “If any of
you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without
finding fault, and it will be given to him.”

As we humble ourselves to ask directions
and obey as they are given, we are empowered to be close to God and stay on the
path to the wonderful blessings He has planned for us.
