HOUSTON, TX (RICE) — Kyle Martens and Luke Willson lead a total of five Rice Owls who were recognized by Phil Steele as part of midseason All Conference USA team which was announced on Tuesday. Steele will follow up his conference selections by announcing his midseason All America team today.
Martens and Willson were named to the first team, while Travis Bradshaw and Scott Mitchell were named to the second team. Freshman kicker Chris Boswell was named to the third team.
Martens averaged 49.8 yards per punt on four kicks vs. the Cougars and did not allow any return yardage. One the season, he leads C-USA and ranks second in the country with a 47.92 average on 36 punts. He has placed 39% of his punts inside the 20 this year (14/36) and 50% of those have been downed inside the 10 (7/14).
Willson is second on the team with 19 receptions for 199 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He has caught at least one pass in six of seven games and both his touchdowns have come in Rice victories.
Bradshaw is second on the team with 48 tackles, despite missing one game. He is eighth among active players with 190 career solo tackles (second among underclassmen). Mitchell made his 37th consecutive start in the Owls Homecoming victory over Houston last Saturday.
Boswell lead the Owls in scoring with 46 points and leads all freshmen kickers with 11 field goals. He opened the season by connecting on at least one field goal in each of the first six games and became the first kicker at Rice to connect on two field goals from at least 50 yards in the same game when he connected on a pair of 50-yarders against North Texas.
The Owls will open a streak of three road games on Saturday when they travel to Orlando, Florida to take on UCF at 2:30 (central).
