IN GOD I TRUST

In God I trust; I will not be afraid.
What can man do to me? Psalm 56:11

Have you ever thought about what you put your trust in? Each day, we all place
our trust in a number of things. We trust the weather forecast to tell us the
weather. We trust the brakes on our car to work. We trust other drivers to
follow traffic laws. We trust our bodies to keep working, our brains to keep
thinking, our abilities to get us through.

But in the Bible, God continually shows examples of how he requires and rewards
those who place their trust in Him. God blesses obedience. When God’s people,
such as David, Daniel, Moses and Gideon trusted God and obeyed, God pulled them
through amazing challenges. David
defeated a giant; Daniel escaped a lion’s den unscathed; Moses led the
Israelites out of slavery; Gideon defeated 120,000 soldiers with an army of
only 300.

God’s word tells us that He is always with us; that He will never leave us or
forsake us. He gives us example after example of those who placed their trust
in Him, and He delivered them. God tells of his unlimited power, unfailing
love, and incomprehensible wisdom.

We trust the weather forecast because it’s usually correct. We trust other drivers because they usually
don’t cause accidents. We trust our brains, bodies, abilities and wisdom
because they usually get us through.

But the problem with all of these things is they are not perfect. Usually they are reliable, but sometimes they
are not. The weather prediction will be
wrong; the brakes will wear out and fail; other drivers make mistakes; we make
bad choices or run into situations that are out of our control.

But God never fails. When He promised something would happen, it did, even if
it seemed impossible to a reasonable man. God has shown in His word, and in the real
world experiences of those who have trusted Him, that He always delivers.

So if God cannot fail, why is it sometimes so difficult to completely trust
Him? I think it all comes down to why we believe what we believe. We trust the
weatherman because they use advanced equipment and is usually right. We trust
the brakes in our car because they usually stop us. We trust ourselves because
we have gotten through things in the past. But wouldn’t it make more sense to
trust in something we know is always right, rather than the things that we know will
fail at some point?

A key to developing this trust is to experience more of God. We have experience
with weather forecasts, cars, drivers, ourselves. What we are lacking is experience with God. To
truly develop the same depth of trust, we have to come to know God. We have to
read His word, review the lives of those who walked with God, pray with Him,
submit to His ways and believe in Him. But the amazing thing is that God says
He will draw close to those who draw close to Him.

My life’s goal is to draw always closer to God. To learn and more importantly to experience
more of God. To trust Him in small things so I can trust more fully in big
things. To obey His word so I can feel His presence and experience more of His work in my life. And to experience
the peace that He provides as I am willing to put myself in His loving hands.
