Ribbon cutting today
Former Houston Rockets player Tracy McGrady continues to leave his mark in Houston, now, it’s
in the classroom instead of on the basketball court. Today at 1 p.m., students and staff at
Kashmere Gardens Elementary (4901 Lockwood Drive, 77026) will
cut the ribbon on the school’s new library/media center made possible by
a $175,000 grant from the Tracy McGrady Foundation. Tracy’s wife CleRenda Harris will be on
hand for the afternoon ribbon cutting.
“We are extremely grateful to Tracy and CleRenda
for their generous donation and their commitment to literacy,” said
Kashmere Gardens Principal Exerta Mackie. “We now have a state of the art
reading and technology center that allows our students not only to access
books, but computers as well. They are using the computers to learn important
internet skills and research techniques, and they will soon begin to create
power point presentations.”
This is the third donation the McGrady Foundation has
made to HISD. Earlier donations to McDade and Betsy Ross Elementary were used
to create reading and technology centers at the schools. McGrady, who used to
play for the Houston Rockets, is now in Detroit
playing basketball for the Pistons. However, his foundation is still committed
to helping youth in Houston.
The mission of the Tracy McGrady Foundation is to
empower, encourage, and enrich the lives of all youth by promoting education
and literacy. The foundation stands behind the belief that childhood years are
the most crucial stage in the learning process, and aiming for academic excellence
is essential. By advocating for education and literacy in the primary years,
the foundation seeks to challenge all youth to reach their optimum potential in
life—to go beyond the ordinary to the extraordinary.

What a timely story! Tracy was just speaking to one of my teachers on the phone yesterday, before I knew anything about the fantasic work he is doing through his foundation. I am Dr. Frederick W. Walker, Principal of Westfield H.S. in Spring Texas. I have been a principal since 2002, but have recently been thinking of opening my own school.
He was speaking to Ms. Dundra Hollins on the subject of starting a school. I have almost 20 years of educational experience and have some ideas on a much needed school venture. 281-686-6618. Please call.
