In
addition to holiday merrymaking and gift-giving, many families deck
their tables with decadent celebratory meals. Many times the women of
the household prep the feast in the kitchen while men zone out in front
of the Christmas Day football game on TV. If this is the case in your
household, this year can be a game-changer, says Dr. Karen Prager,
professor of psychology and head of the Gender Studies program at The
University of Texas at Dallas.
She has five tips for making holiday meal
prep a family affair:
· First
and foremost, women must be willing to say “I’m not doing it all this
year.” They cannot back down and say to themselves, “If no one else
does it, I will.”
· Men must have a sense of fairness about this family event and a willingness to do their part to make it successful.
· Introduce
group participation and organization. Let people take on tasks that
interest them and that they can do well. Creating a feeling of choice
fosters wholehearted participation.
· Women cannot micro-manage while others undertake preparations. They must be willing to delegate and let go.
· Keep
a team atmosphere in the aftermath of the feast. Praise for everyone is
essential – not just the men who helped this year. Don’t lavish praise
on men for what the women have been doing without any praise all along.
Everyone should receive positive feedback for what they’ve been willing
to contribute.
