Many of us have heard the line “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas”. While sometimes thought of as a clever
marketing slogan or a coy way to keep a secret, this term and the type of
thinking it encourages is dangerous. Our
culture has grown to glorify self-indulgence, pleasure and deception. Rather
than call evil or irresponsible behavior what it is, many are content to wink
and think “As long as nobody knows, it’s OK.”
The Bible shows that this way of thinking is sinful and harmful. Nothing we do is without consequences; and
nothing we do can be hidden from God.
“He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses
and renounces them finds mercy” (Proverbs 28:13)
“Woe to those who go to great depths to hide their plans from the LORD,
who do their work in darkness and think, “Who sees us? Who will know?”
(Isaiah 29:15)
If one is ever comfortable only when one’s behavior is hidden, it should
be a clear that we are not acting in a godly manner. God makes clear in the Bible that choosing
sin over God’s ways leads to death. We should always be aware that our secrets
will be exposed.
“If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness,
we lie and do not live by the truth.” (1 John 1:6)
The great thing to remember is that God always welcomes us back . If you have found yourself covering over the
dark parts of your life, if you have done things you wouldn’t want to share
with others, be assured that God still loves you and has provided a way to be
free of the guilt and shame. The Bible
shows that through turning to God, confessing our sin and repenting of it, we
are forgiven by God.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive
us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9)
