LT. GOV. DEWHURST MAKES SENATOR DAN PATRICK’S SONOGRAM BILL A PRIORITY

Legislation to
protect women’s health moves to the top tier in the Texas Senate

AUSTIN – This morning, Senator Dan Patrick announced that his
sonogram legislation will receive the bill number Senate Bill 16.

SB 16, known as “The Sonogram Bill,” will require
abortion providers to offer a patient a sonogram of her child, an explanation
of the child’s current state of development, and the opportunity to hear the
heartbeat before the abortion procedure. However, the patient can decline
receiving these services. The sonogram bill is key to ensure that women are
better informed about the decision to obtain an abortion.

In every legislative session, the Lt. Governor reserves the
low bill numbers for his high priority bills. “I appreciate the Lt.
Governor making our bill such a priority,” remarked Senator Patrick.
“He has been a big supporter of this bill in the past two sessions. With
his assistance, I’m sure we will finally get this important legislation through
the House and on the governor’s desk.”

Representative
Geanie Morrison (R-Victoria) has filed the companion House Bill 201 in the
House
