CHILDHOOD PATHWAYS

Sidewalk%20Artist

full of hope on that fresh cement sidewalk homeward bound
stopping briefly at the local corner store
its the spring of 1969 and i can buy
chips for a quarter and chocolate for a dime
wax tubes filled with sugary pink water
giggling friends and exciting dreams
they are real aren’t they? the childhood dreams of our hearts
friendships bloom innocent untainted by reality of status
and have or have not realities
landmarks such as schools, shops, hospitals and homes are new, shiny painted
hardworking families immigrant freshness
the world is your oyster
go find the pearl!!!!!!

so we walk, skip and walk and somehow
we tire and our paths diverge as often happens in life
and i walk away far from this place where my dreams had their birthing
down another street
and i find i’m happy, fulfilled
yet first friends are now strangers
long gone from my life and this place
of our destinies entwined..,

i return another springtime
to see the sad decay of this place
and feel the lost hope
and life that has faded in every surrounding

many are gone now forever
never will i know if they dreamed a dream big enough

i miss you my old friends
maybe thinking i should have tried harder
to walk the pathways with you and others i loved
just to make dreams come true….
