REMAIN IN JESUS

Do you ever find yourself getting distracted?
I know I do. I’ll plan my
day, get fired up to accomplish my top priorities, start working, and
then…the busy-ness of the day intrudes. Interruptions, other projects,
phone calls, errands, emails – pretty soon what I started my
day on has been pushed back to the end. It can be a struggle to get back
on track and keep my top priorities on top.

The same thing can happen in our spiritual lives. We may start with great
intentions of putting God first in our lives, but often the busy-ness of life
can interfere. Soon, one can easily find that we are reading our Bible
less, praying less, and that more of our
thoughts are on the stuff of our daily life, rather than on Jesus.

Jesus knew that the temptation to become distracted would confront us. He instructed his followers to remain in him.

“Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself;
it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in
me.” (John 15:4)

The danger of getting distracted from God is more than just having our priorities
upside down. Our ability to enjoy the best God has planned for us is
restricted when we drift away from God. While we may still believe in
Jesus, we cannot experience the fullness of life God
intends unless we are daily remaining in him.

We can remain in Jesus by reading the Bible each day, spending time in prayer
and meditating on God’s word. We can turn all our thoughts to Jesus.
One must be intentional about keeping God first and not allowing
distractions to interfere.

Jesus also said: “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never
go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty” (John 6:35)

In Jesus’ time, bread was a part of one’s meal each day. Just as one would
starve physically if he didn’t eat each day, we will starve spiritually if we
don’t spend time with God each day. But Jesus’ promise – that we will
never go hungry or thirsty if we remain in him – shows that we can enjoy the
fullness of life God intends as we remain in him.
