ARIZONA PROFESSOR VICTIM OF EXPRESS KIDNAPPING IN MEXICO

Rodriguez

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico – Veronica
Perez Rodriguez, 35, an archeology professor at the University of Northern
Arizona was kidnapped on Friday by armed gunmen as she visited her mother in
Ciudad Juarez.

Reports now say that Rodriquez has been returned by the
kidnappers. This is now being described
as an “express kidnapping” a frequent occurrence in Mexico which the U.S.
Bureau of Consular Affairs calls an attempt to gain quick cash in exchange for
a kidnap victim’s release.

The Bureau of Consular Affairs says
these type of kidnappings occur in all of Mexico’s large cities and target
non-Mexicans who appear to be wealthy or middle class.

According to the Chihuahua state
prosecutor’s office, Rodriguez was visiting her mother in Ciudad Juarez Friday
afternoon “and the moment she left her family’s house she was intercepted
by armed men and deprived of her liberty.”

39 U.S. citizens were murdered in
Ciudad Juarez in 2010. Ciudad Juarez has
a population of over 1 million people and is considered the most dangerous and
violent city in Mexico. Ciudad Juarez
located is just across the International Border from El Paso, Texas.
