GAME ON!

MAGNOLIA ISD – The annual MISD Chess Tournament was held on May 19, 2011. The room was filled with 148 elementary school students, but the only sound heard was the moving of chess pieces on the boards.

Each elementary school in the district has a chess club which is lead by the campus Gifted and Talented teacher. Chess is a game of patience, skill, and planning ahead – all excellent at helping to prepare a student for academic success. The clubs have been learning new strategies and practicing all year, hoping to win the coveted golden cup trophy at the conclusion of the tournament.

Students were awarded a ribbon for each game that was played, and the top scores from each school were used to name the winning team. Taking home the trophy this year was Ellisor Elementary with 20.5 points. Nichol Sawmill was close behind in second place with 19.5 points, and in third place was Williams Elementary with 19.0 points. J. L. Lyon earned 18.5 points, Magnolia Parkway and Bear Branch tied with 15.5, Smith Elementary scored 15.0, and Magnolia Elementary earned 14.5 points.

Thanks go to First Baptist Church for hosting the event and to all of the volunteer judges and wonderful parents that made the MISD Chess Tournament a success.
