CAMP INVENTION GETS UNDER WAY

MAGNOLIA ISD – In the Camp Invention SPARK program, campers are building creative thinking skills that will last them a lifetime. They are learning to produce and consider many alternatives, be open to new ideas, make rich connections, work in teams with diverse perspectives, and imagine possibilities.

At Bear Branch Elementary, campers, instructors, and counselors have had a great time brainstorming ideas, exploring concepts, and constructing inventions this week. “They never cease to astonish us with their innovative ideas and amazing enthusiasm for discovering and learning through hands-on fun,” says camp director JoDail Kovanda.

The Camp Invention program not only teaches children academic content, such as economics and circuits, but it also helps them think creatively about solving problems that they encounter. The work children create is a stepping stone which represents vital 21st century learning skills.

Students are recognized and praised for their creative efforts while learning that science is fun. Campers develop the self-confidence to think like scientists and inventors, which will serve them well when they get to middle school and in their everyday life. They will be less likely to be intimidated by the more formal middle school experience and realize that they are capable of finding answers.

The instructors are Christi McDaniel, Karen Bowden, and Lori LaBone. The counselors are Mackenzie Childs, James McDade, Amanda Krenek, and junior counselors Betheny LaBone and Brooke Harris.
