THE 2011 SEASON: The Astros finished in 6th place in the NL Central Division with a 56-106 record, setting a franchise record for losses in a season. HOU was 31-50 at home and 25-56 on the road…2011 marked just the 5th time in the last 20 seasons that the Astros have finished with a record below .500.
AT MINUTE MAID: 2011 marked the Astros 12th season at Minute Maid Park. The Astros reached the 32-million mark in attendance at Minute Maid Park in 2011, and have averaged over 2.6 million fans per season in the ballpark’s history.
HOME IMPROVEMENT: The Astros were 12-9 (.571) at home after 8/15, and 17-17 at home after the All-Star Break.
CLOSE CALLS: 79, or virtually half (49%) of the Astros games were decided by two runs or less. They were 20-28 in one-run games and 9-22 in two run games.
GUNSLINGERS: For the 6th time in franchise history, the Astros led the NL in outfield assists with 39, which was their most since tallying a NL-best and franchise-record-tying 47 in 2003 (also had 47 in ‘75)…Carlos Lee led the club with 10 outfield assists, which ranked 2nd among NL left fielders, despite making just 78 starts in LF…Brian Bogusevic ranked 6th among NL right-fielders with nine assists, despite making just 31 starts in right field (40 games in RF overall)…his nine assists were T-3rd in franchise history for a rookie.

WALK-OFFS: The Astros had nine walk-off wins in 2012, and 17 wins in their final at-bat. HOU had four walk-off wins in 2010…Walk-Off Granny: Brian Bogusevic’s PH, walk-off grand slam in a 6-5 win on 8/16 vs. CHC was the club’s first since Gregg Zaun turned the trick in a 7-4 win on 6/27/02 vs. ARI.
MILESTONE GAME: The Astros-Rockies game played at Minute Maid Park on 9/24 was the 200,000th game played in Major League history. 199,992 games had been played entering the 9/24 games, and the Astros-Rockies game was the 8th game to become official that day.
LITTLE BIG MAN: Jose Altuve tallied a combined 200 hits at the Major League (61) and minor league levels (139), hitting a combined .346 (200×578) for the season. Altuve’s combined .389 avg. at Class A Lancaster and Double A Corpus Christi prior to his 7/19 Major League call-up led all of minor league baseball. His 51 starts at 2nd base for the Astros were the most by a rookie since Bill Doran started 151 games at 2nd in 1983.
YOUNGBLOODS: The 20 rookies used by the Astros in 2011 were tops in the Majors and tied for the 2nd highest total in franchise history. The club record is 21, set by the 1963 Colt 45s. The 1991 club also used 20 rookies…source: Elias.
CONSISTENT CABALLO: With 94 RBI on the season, Carlos Lee reached 90 RBI for the 9th time in his career and has tallied 80 or more in each of his 13 ML seasons. Alex Rodriguez is the only active player with more 80-plus RBI seasons (15).
MARK THE MAGNIFICENT: RHP Mark Melancon led the club in saves (20) and relief wins (8-4), with the latter being the most by an Astros reliever since Doug Henry won eight games in 1998…in his final 11 apps. of the season (11.2 IP), Melancon did not allow a run,
was 6-for-6 in save opportunities and held opponents to just three hits in 11.2 IP. Opposing hitters were 3×37 (.081 avg.) off him in that span.
WRIGHT ON: LHP Wesley Wright went 19 consecutive appearances without allowing a run from 8/8- 9/26…in that span, opponents were 3×32 (.094) vs. him in 10.2 innings of work.
59 AND COUNTING FOR THE CAPTAIN: Hall of Famer and longtime Astros radio voice Milo Hamilton broadcast from his 59th different Major League park when the Astros visited the Rogers Centre in Toronto for a 3-game series vs. the Blue Jays (5/20-22)…2011 marked Hamilton’s 27th season as the radio voice of the Astros and the 58th season overall broadcasting MLB games, which ranks 2nd only to Vin Scully’s 63 seasons.
SILVER BROWNIE: 2011 marked the 25th season that Bill Brown has served as the television voice of the Houston Astros…Brown was recognized by the Astros on the field prior to the 6/11 Astros-Braves game.
WALL OF HONOREE: Brown was also the 2011 inductee into the Houston Media
Wall of Honor.
STAFF INTACT: Manager Brad Mills’ entire coaching staff will return next season. All have contracts that run through the 2012 season.
ML DEBUTS: Eleven different players made their ML debuts with the Astros in 2011, including seven pitchers.
SEASON OF FIRSTS: Six different Astros pitchers each earned their 1st ML win in 2011, which is the most by an Astros team since the 1976 club had eight hurlers earn their 1st win (Elias). The 2011 pitchers were:
LHP Fernando Abad (4/7 at CIN) and RHP’s David Carpenter (9/19 at CIN), Jordan Lyles (8/3 vs. CIN), Aneury Rodriguez (8/16 vs. CHC), Fernando Rodriguez (5/31 at CHC) and Henry Sosa (8/25 at SF)…Jose Altuve, J.D. Martinez, Jimmy Paredes and J.B. Shuck each collected their 1st ML hit this season, while Altuve, Martinez, Paredes and Brian
Bogusevic hit their first ML HR…Lyles and Sosa also each collected their 1st ML hit in 2011.
ROSTER COUNT: The Astros used 47 different players in 2011, including 23
pitchers. The club used 48 players in 2010.
