Target employee Seth Coleman joined local consumers and faith leaders to deliver 190,000 signatures to company’s corporate headquarters Monday.
MINNEAPOLIS – A Target employee hand-delivered more than 190,000 Change.org petition signatures to Target’s corporate headquarters on Monday, November 21, demanding the company push back its holiday opening currently slated for midnight Thursday. Hundreds of Target customers also flooded the company’s Facebook page throughout the day with comments urging the retailer to ‘Save Thanksgiving.’
Seth Coleman, a Target employee and Minnesota resident, was joined by a group of Target shoppers, faith leaders and friends as he carried 190,000 signatures to Target President & CEO Gregg Steinhafel’s office Monday.
More than 190,000 people from every state have joined the explosive campaign on Change.org in the past week calling on Target to reverse its decision to open late Thanksgiving night for pre-Black Friday shopping and instead allow workers to spend the holiday with family.
The popular campaign on Change.org was launched by Anthony Hardwick, a Target employee in Omaha, Nebraska, after he learned the company’s management had moved the standard “Black Friday” opening time up from 5am on Friday to midnight on Thanksgiving. The new opening time will require employees to arrive at work no later than 11pm on Thanksgiving Day.
“This Black Friday race to the bottom doesn’t make anybody’s holiday happier,” Coleman explained. “I hope that Mr. Steinhafel decides to support his employees and their families and show our customers that they really can expect more from Target by staying closed on Thanksgiving.”
“We speak with great piety about ‘family values’ but our actions imply only the value of more,” said the Reverend Dr. David Breeden of the Minnesota Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, who was present at the event. “Target Corporation, consider what a few hours means to these employees; consider what time with family means. Consider and be considerate — please.”
“Watching Seth hand over more than 190,000 signatures to Target on Monday was a powerful experience,” said Jess Kutch, director of organizing for Change.org. “A few years ago, if an employee wanted to change the policies of a big corporation, he’d have to drop a note in the suggestion box. Now, folks like Seth can use Change.org to connect with tens of thousands of people around the issues they care about. And the best part is that they can actually make a difference in the world. It’s really empowering.”
