KISD students and staff organize holiday projects for the Klein community
High School Campuses
Klein Forest’s student groups have planned several holiday projects: the Ambassador’s Program is planning a Christmas give-away on Dec. 17, at the Breen Plaza, Rosslyn Plaza, Inwood Village and Alpha Kids Center communities; students in the International Business Academy (IBA) are having its annual NAM Candy Cane Race from Nov. 28-Dec. 13. The IBA group has donated more than 11,000 non-perishable items to date during the past two years of the event; The African American Heritage Society (AAHS) is collecting Teddy Bears for Cancer to be given to children with cancer, who are in shelters, or that are homeless; dual credit English III classes are hosting a toy drive for The Bear Room at Children’s Protective Services; the No Place For Hate club is collecting canned goods and toys to donate to the Willowbend Apartment Complex families who lost their homes in a fire prior to Thanksgiving; faculty and staff are participating in the Angel Tree project to benefit more than 40 families and students in need from the KFHS student body; and academic houses in various parts of the building are collecting toys for Toys for Tots.
Klein High student groups joined in the giving season, with activities including: the FFA held a toy drive to be donated to Santa’s Toy Shop in Fort Hood and also sold wreaths for Wreaths Across America. The group put out wreaths at the Houston National Cemetery on Dec. 10; KHS cheerleaders are donating toys to the Montgomery County Fire victim’s children, in addition to food supplies and items to the Magnolia West volleyball players affected by the wildfires; Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) and the Seniors on Service group are collecting food items until Dec. 15, with all donations going to NAM on FM 1960 and Kuykendahl Rd.; Technology Student Association (TSA) club members will be bringing new toys to children of military men and women who are serving in active duty; the KHS Standleaders participated in the Samaritan’s Purse Project at Wildwood Baptist Church before Thanksgiving. They donated eight shoeboxes, four for boys and four for girls, each packed with assorted school supplies, toys, hygiene items, etc. They enclosed a return-addressed picture postcard of the Standleaders in each box, and shipped them to impoverished recipients around the world; the KHS student council sponsored a food drive for Aldine Youth Foundation; KHS National Honor Society (NHS) is currently collecting toys for needy families; DECA is collecting new or slightly used stuffed animals through Dec. 15, for local EMS to give comfort to young children when their parents have been hurt or in an accident; and the Instructional Practices in Education (IPIE) students are collecting toys for Mittelstadt.
Klein Oak English classes, Fellowship of Christian Students, AFROTC, Spanish club, student council and Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), have provided gifts to 11 families in the Klein Oak community. Klein Oak baseball team also held a kickball fundraiser, with participants donating toys to benefit KISD elementary students.
Intermediate Campuses
Hildebrandt student groups hosted several activities including: the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is writing letters from Santa to respond to first graders at Northampton; cheerleaders and the Mustang for Christ groups are sponsoring a Hildebrandt family for Christmas; Ties for Champions will sponsor a family as well through the Kids Helping Kids project; the student council is collecting art supplies, dolls and Matchbox cars for a local shelter, putting together care packages to send to soldiers overseas, and is scheduled to visit a nursing home in Tomball on Dec. 17, from 9:30 a.m.-noon to share cookies and read Christmas stories to the elderly.
Krimmel had several student groups host special holiday events, including: the student council held a food and toy drive on Nov. 28-Dec. 7, with the goal to collect enough food and toys to support 50 families in the Spring/Klein community; the NJHS students made Christmas cards for American soldiers overseas to support the American Red Cross Christmas Card for the Troops program; the library and environmental clubs held a used book sale to purchase blankets for homeless shelters.
Wunderlich’s student council held a canned food drive Dec. 5-9, to benefit the Houston Food Bank. The teachers and staff are also teaming up with Faithbridge Church to provide 150 students with sweatshirts and holiday meals for their families.
Elementary Campuses
Benignus student council is sponsoring a Toys for Tots drive and making holiday placemats for a retirement home. Students and staff are also sending holiday cards, letters and decorated scarves to the troops.
Blackshear sponsored its first ever campus toy drive on Dec. 5-9, 2011, as students brought new, unwrapped toys. For each toy donated, student-made candy canes are hung on a Christmas tree on the stage in the cafeteria.
Brill Elementary PTO held their annual toy drive, Fri., Dec. 9, the faculty and PTO board members baked for the seven Title I elementary schools in a project called Share the Blessings. PTO board members dropped-off their treats at Brill and drivers picked them up and delivered them to the campuses.
Ehrhardt is sponsoring its Friends Helping Friends toy drive to benefit other KISD elementary schools, and its traditional Baskets of Love for Ehrhardt families in need.
Greenwood Forest students and staff collected new, unwrapped toys for children in need during its annual toy drive. In addition, faculty and staff are filling holiday shoeboxes with small toiletries, school supplies, toys, snacks and gift cards that will be wrapped and delivered on Dec. 15, 2011, to students in need.
Hassler’s toy drive ran from Nov. 30-Dec. 9, with toys benefiting Hassler and Eiland families.
Lemm is holding its traditional food and toy drive this holiday season to continue its support of the less fortunate families at their school.
Metzler sponsored a Metzler Giving Tree for the second year. Through the generosity of faculty and staff, clothing and toys are provided for some of Metzler’s needy students.
Mueller sponsors a Kids Helping Kids project, providing an opportunity for students to reflect and consider others who do not have as many resources. The campus sponsors a toy and food drive from Nov. 28-Dec. 14, with donations benefiting families in the Klein community.
Kohrville’s Coyote Council and Choir are hosting a toy drive to go to the Greenspoint Mission and Kohrville families. Recently, the school also raised $2,255 during a change drive to donate to American Red Cross to help the wildfire evacuees.
Northampton hosted a food drive for needy Northampton area families from Dec. 5-8, with items distributed on Fri., Dec. 9.
