District Continues Delivering Promises Made During 2007 Construction Campaign
HOUSTON ISD – Thousands of students at 15 HISD elementary schools are already enjoying their new campuses and many more will too as the Houston Independent School District completes six new campuses in 2012 and expands 10 more in time for 2012-2013.
These new campuses were made possible by the $805 million bond referendum approved by voters in 2007. HISD continues to fulfill each commitment made to the public in 2007, said HISD Superintendent Dr. Terry Grier.
“HISD strives to build a strong culture of trust through action in the community,” Dr. Grier said. “As the district continues to fulfill every commitment made in 2007 on time and on budget, we hope the community will see the tremendous, long-term impact this voter-approved work will have on our students and the city.”
Since the start of this school year, HISD has opened 15 new campuses (Peck/MacArthur, Almeda, Frost, Lovett, Horn, Berry, Cunningham, Gregg, Herod, Roosevelt, Patterson, Piney Point, DeChaumes, Lewis and DeAnda elementary schools) and significantly renovated 60 campuses.
“We know that our schools and the community are excited to have these new campuses and the much needed improvements being performed,” said Chief Operating Officer Leo Bobadilla. “We are very grateful for our dedicated team of staff and contractors who continue to work diligently to enhance safety and security in our schools and create a better learning environment for our students and staff.”
Six more new campuses (Allen/Kennedy, Atherton, Lockhart/Turner and Neff/White relief elementary schools, Billy Reagan K-8 School, and Carnegie Vanguard High School) will open this year.
Each new and expanded HISD school is a “green” school, built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. Key features in LEED schools include the installation of water-conserving plumbing, energy efficient systems and controls, improved air quality, and use of natural light.
In addition, construction crews continue renovations and major facility upgrades at more than 40 HISD campuses across the city as part of the voter-approved building program.
