GOAL-SETTING, FUN ACTIVITIES KEY TO A SUCCESSFUL EXERCISE REGIME

CYPRESS, TX – Twenty-twelve is here and you may be contemplating resolutions that would positively impact your health. A good place to begin would be to start an exercise program.

In addition to the benefit of losing weight and improving self-confidence, increasing physical activity can lead to a longer life and better health. Exercise helps prevent heart disease and also helps your overall wellbeing. You may have more energy, less stress and see a decrease in your appetite.

Before You Begin

Most people can begin gradual, moderate exercise on their own, but to be safe, talk to your doctor before beginning a new program. They will need to know if you’ve had any heart trouble, high blood pressure or if you experience dizziness, chest pains or other symptoms.

A Good Place to Start

Exercises that increase your heart rate and move large muscles, such as the muscles in your legs and arms, are best. Other things to remember include:

Choosing activities that are fun, not exhausting. Walking is popular and doesn’t require special equipment. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Instead of driving, walk to your close by destinations.
Add variety. Develop a repertoire of several activities that you can enjoy. That way, exercise will never seem boring or routine. Other fun exercises you may want to try are swimming, biking, jogging and dancing.
Wear comfortable, properly fitted footwear and comfortable, loose-fitting clothing appropriate for the weather and the activity.
Find a convenient time and place to do activities. If you aren’t a morning person, try working out before dinner each evening. Make it a habit, but be flexible. If you miss a work-out session, work activity into your day another way.

Other tips that will help keep your exercise program on track are:

Set specific long-term goals, but keep short-term goals flexible.
Reward yourself for exercising and reaching goal milestones.
Surround yourself with reminders to exercise.
Work at a level that lets you feel as good when you stop as when you start.
Don’t judge the benefits only by the weight scale. Exercise has also been shown to reduce stress and fight depression

And lastly, the American Heart Association recommends people who are striving to be healthy to surround themselves with supportive people. Exercising with a friend or a family member or even a personal trainer can help make it fun, and encourages you to stick to it.
