Schultz Elementary hosts family activity night to
promote healthy living
KLEIN ISD – Four obesity prevention programs in the Klein
ISD made school year resolutions to make changes and promote healthy eating
among students, faculty and parents. Trim Epps Island Community (Epps Island
Elementary), GWF Grizzlies Get Fit (Greenwood Forest Elementary), McDougle Grow
Your Own (McDougle Elementary), and Shape Up Schultz (Schultz Elementary) began
initiatives as a result of a grant during the 2011-12 school year.
The Klein ISD was one of six districts in the nation
selected during the summer to receive School Nurse Childhood Obesity Prevention
Education (S.C.O.P.E.) training. As a result of the training, the United Health
Foundation and National Association of School Nurses (NASN) awarded $2,500 S.C.O.P.E.
grants to each campus to conduct obesity prevention programs for students.
“This training gave us the skills we needed to help shape
kids lives,” said Yvonne Clarke, nurse at Schultz Elementary. “Obesity is a
growing problem in the U.S. and we have been constantly working on ways to
empower our school community through active and positive programs, which this
grant has allowed us to do.”
Shape Up Schultz, created by Clarke and a team of teachers,
is designed to promote healthy lifestyle choices for families. The school hosts
its second Family Activity Night on Tues., Jan. 24, 2012, after a
successful launch in October. Participants will rotate through stations to
learn karate lessons, a Wii dance competition, exercise and fitness routines,
health and nutrition basics, and a chef from KISD food services department will
present on how to prepare easy, healthy and affordable family meals. Vendor
booths are scheduled showcasing several local businesses and organizations, and
Methodist Willowbrook Hospital will offer onsite cholesterol screenings for the
first 40 adults. Click

“Our family activity night is possible with little to no
cost as vendors and the community pull together to make it successful,” noted
Schultz Principal Sherri Davenport. “I am very proud of my staff as they have
really come together and made substantial changes for the betterment of our
students and families at Schultz.”
Additional Shape Up Schultz activities are: a bike
rodeo safety event, a student school lunch survey, a Family Activity Night
in April 2012, a roller skating week celebration in the spring, a Turn off the
T.V. Week challenge, and a jogging club. The jogging club has more than 100
parents and students arrive at Schultz on Tuesday mornings at 7:15-7:45 a.m. to
walk/jog the track. During bad weather, the group takes their trek indoors
through the halls of the school. Students also log their miles throughout the
year on a school tracker.
“It takes everyone working together to make this program
successful, from the students to the parents and the teachers,” said Genevieve
Forsch, P.E. teacher at Schultz. “With new technology and the times we live in being
so different, we want to encourage the kids and their families to get active
and make lifestyle changes together.”
