WALLER JUNIOR HIGH STUDENTS TAKE PRIDE IN THEIR COMMUNITY AND SCHOOL

By Marianne Kosik

WALLER ISD – In the early hours on January 7th, several Waller Junior High students jumped out of bed early to be at their school at 8 a.m. to volunteer their time and energy to participate in a semester project of beautifying their school. The boys could have slept in on the Saturday morning, but instead shoveled dirt and grass, hammered gardening frames, and moved heavy bags of soil to prepare an area on the school grounds that will soon display blossoming flowers and shrubs. The building of a cistern is planned for an upcoming weekend as well as the planting of seedlings and plants.

The hard-working students that participated in the project belong to an organization called Boyz to Men. The mentoring club is made up of a group of students that learn gentlemen skills all year long, and learn to live by the club’s motto “Pride, Respect, and Responsibility”. The Saturday’s volunteer work displayed “Pride”, one of the three words the club drives. The students built “Pride” in the community and schools by taking part in the beautification project. They also learn to “Respect” themselves and others. They learn to take “Responsibility” and be accountable for their actions by making good choices and to think about consequences. Some students truly displayed their “Responsibility” as they walked to school to participate in the project because they did not have automobile transportation.

The Boyz to Men left their “Pride” mark on the school grounds with the gardening project, just as they have with other beautification projects they have been involved in. Last year, the students headed up a Highway Clean Up project as they teamed up with the Schultz Junior High organization to clean up the community highway.

The students are to be commended for displaying their Waller pride and for volunteering their Saturday to help beautify their community and school.
