HOUSTON CHRISTIAN VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM SELECTED AS A FINALIST FOR THE 2012 SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD

HOUSTON, TX – The varsity football team at Houston Christian (HC) was selected as a finalist for the 2012 Sportsmanship Award for the 2011 football season by Houston’s Touchdown Club, founded in 1966 as a chapter of the National Football Foundation. The team will be honored at the Seventh Annual Comerica Bank Sportsmanship Award banquet on January 25, 2012 at the JW Marriott, 5150 Westheimer.

These finalists are among some of the finest teams in the city, from each school division. A representative of the HC football squad will be seated at the head table during the ceremony, along with his head coach for the season Mike Johnston. Coach Johnston recently retired at the end of the year after eight successful seasons as HC head Football coach. The Houston football chapter of the Texas Association of Sports Officials will name only one winner in the 3A/Private School division, in which HC is a nominee along with Lutheran South, St. Thomas, Stafford, and West Columbia.

This is the seventh time that the TD Club partnered with the FCA and Comerica Bank to present Sportsmanship awards to area teams based on voting by active officials judging each game on the field and reporting back to the independent accounting firm for the TD Club. Categories include the actions of the coaches, team, support groups (such as band, drill team, and parents), as well as respect for the American flag.

HC sports dignitaries will sit at a special table for the luncheon and look forward to hearing an encouraging message from Sam Houston State University football coach Willie Fritz. The Touchdown Club of Houston awards thousands of scholarship dollars and has provided weights and fitness equipment for needy schools around Houston. Through its Senior Showcase football combine, and in cooperation with HISD and the Houston Texans of the NFL® the Houston TD Club has helped over 200 students go on to compete at the next level as a student-athlete in college scholarships.
