CYFAIR ISD – Gatorade, in collaboration with ESPNHS, announced Cypress Woods High School senior Craig Nowak as its 2011-2012 Gatorade Texas Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year on Monday. Nowak is the first recipient of this award from Cypress Woods.
The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence and high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the racecourse.
Nowak won the Class 5A state cross country championship in 2011 with a time of 15:16.05, leading the Wildcats to fourth place as a team. He also won the Foot Locker South Regional championships in 14:37 and finished 14th at the national Foot Locker Cross Country Championships. He won the Nike South Invitational, placed third at the Nike Cross Nationals South Regional championship and also took third at the Nike Cross Nationals Final with a time of 15:26.70.
He has maintained an A-minus average in the classroom, and is active in his church youth group, local volunteer efforts and mission trips.
“Craig sets his goals high and works harder than anyone to achieve them,” said Cypress Woods head coach Greg Zarate. “He’s an outstanding athlete and student and a true role model for his teammates and school.”
Nowak plans to enroll at Oklahoma State University in the fall, where he will be a part of the Cowboys’ cross country program.
