Dixon, Knight combine for 50 points in comeback
victory
BRENHAM, TX – Miles
Dixon and Daishon Knight combined for seven second-half 3-pointers to lead the
Blinn Buccaneers to a 79-70 comeback victory over the Panola Ponies Saturday at
the Blinn P.E. Building.
Dixon scored a game-high
28 points and Knight scored 17 of his 22 in the second half to help the
Buccaneer men’s basketball team erase an 11-point deficit with 16:30 remaining.
“We talked about it at
halftime – you’ve got to go to the post, draw the defense in, and then kick it
out, and that’s when we started hitting our shots,” Blinn head coach Tra Arnold
said. “Our posts made a couple of great passes and guys hit their shots.”
The Buccaneers trailed
just 32-31 at halftime, but the Ponies went on a 7-0 run to open the second
half and led 44-33 when Dixon drained back-to-back 3-pointers to get the
Buccaneers back in the game.
With six minutes
remaining, Knight hit a 3-pointer to pull the Bucs within three, 63-60, and a
minute later Dixon was fouled as he made a 3-point bucket. Dixon made the
ensuing free throw to cut Panola’s lead to one, and a put-back bucket by Shamel
Williams with 3:55 left gave the Bucs their first lead of the second half.
Knight’s third 3-pointer
of the second half with 2:50 remaining gave the Buccaneers a 70-68 lead, and
the Bucs would never again trail in the game.
Zieyik Estime led Panola
with 25 points.
The win improved the
Buccaneers to 16-4 on the season and 6-3 in the Region XIV Conference.
“The bottom line is we
protected our home floor. Now we get ready for the next one,” Arnold said.
Blinn travels to
Corsicana, Texas on Wednesday to face Navarro College at 7 p.m.
