FORT BEND ISD – Fort Bend ISD students are among 230,000 Texas students who will benefit from a $100,000 grant from the State Farm Youth Advisory Board to Junior Achievement (JA) of Southeast Texas. State Farm Agent, Darryl Mayo, presented the grant award to Rick Franke, president of JA of Southeast Texas, during a check presentation on January 26 at Ridgegate Elementary School. The grant will help fund JA’s financial literacy service-learning project, “What A Difference A Day Makes,” which allows high school students to serve as role models to younger students in their communities while sharing important knowledge about financial literacy, entrepreneurship and free enterprise.
Joining in the grant presentation were: Lavanta Williams, Principal at Ridgegate Elementary School; Inger Louis, Ridgegate Elementary School Counselor; Kisha Porter, Ridgegate Elementary School second-grade teacher; Erica Richards and Sarah Kalala, Willowridge High School Student Council Sponsors; Dr. Marc Smith, Assistant Superintendent, FBISD Department of School Administration; Alice Ledford, Assistant Director, FBISD Special Education Services; and Junior Achievement representatives Kevin R. Hattery, Executive Vice President, Development; Larry Washington, Senior Operations Manager; and Nicole Headington, Marketing Manager.
Prior to the grant presentation, 28 members of the Willowridge High School Student Council took part in the “What A Difference A Day Makes” initiative by teaching JA’s hands-on financial literacy programs to more than 300 Ridgegate Elementary School students in grades 3-5.
“We’re thrilled that Junior Achievement of Southeast Texas is providing local students with opportunities to understand and master financial literacy through service-learning, which combines classroom-based learning with community service,” said Darryl Mayo, State Farm Agent. “Our State Farm Youth Advisory Board and the Good Neighbor grants are examples of State Farm’s commitment to education, our community, and our youth.”
