HOUSTON – Harry Zamora, a Houston
Police Lieutenant with more than 31 years of service, is scheduled to
officially retire this upcoming Saturday, February 4th, 2012. Zamora who was pinned first as a Houston
Police Officer in 1980 by then Chief of Police B. K. Johnson has served 20
years in HPD Command assignments including service as a field training coordinator,
an internal affairs commander, tactical unit commander and gang unit commander.
“My life as a police officer
has been sworn to service before self and to my fellow
citizens,” said Zamora who was recognized last month by ABC’s Katie
Couric as one of America’s 11 Heroes of 2011 for rescuing a man from
a burning car crash with no care for himself but for those around him.
Zamora arrived at a car crash near
Greenway Plaza last February compelled to run toward the car completely
engulfed in flames when all others were running away. For those selfless
actions and others Zamora, a Texas Master Peace Officer, has been awarded the
Houston Police Medal of Valor, the State of Texas, Star of Texas Award, Congressional
Special Recognition and a Texas House of Representatives Award for Heroic
Actions.
“In my many years of HPD
Service, it did occur to me what may happen when I’m looking out for
others,” said Zamora who will forever have scars on his hand.
The elderly man did not survive but
“my husband did everything he could and suffered third degree burns in the
process,” Zamora’s wife wrote. “He says he’s just doing his job. I
think not…There’s no such greater love for mankind than to risk your life for
a complete stranger.”
He has been recognizing by US
Rep. Green and the Houston Police Officers Union, the National
Association of Police Organizations, the Houston Police Organization of Spanish
Speaking Officers and Houston City Council Member and Former Police Chief
C.O. “Brad” Bradford.
Zamora’s retirement from HPD and his
birthday this month will be celebrated at Peppers on Fairmont Parkway in the
City of Pasadena the Saturday following his retirement on February 11th,
2012 and the public is invited to attend the festivities.
He is also currently
a Democratic candidate for Harris County Constable Pct. 2
in the upcoming Democratic Primary.
