One-day, 18-hole event tees off at 10 a.m., Saturday, and features Rice and Houston Baptist
HUMBLE, TX – The University of Houston golf team will begin its 2012 spring season a little earlier than originally planned when the Cougars play host to Rice and Houston Baptist during the Redstone Challenge this weekend.
The one-day, 18-hole event tees off at 10 a.m., Saturday, at Redstone Golf Club. As during regular NCAA competition, the Houston-area teams will use 5-man lineups with the low four scores counting toward the team total.
While the Redstone Challenge is the start of the 2012 spring season for the Cougars, it was a late addition to the team’s schedule. Head coach Jonathan Dismuke and assistant coach Chris Hill announced the addition earlier this month.
The Cougars had one day remaining on the NCAA-allowed 24-day competition schedule. Rather than waste that day, Dismuke decided to add the Redstone Challenge.
“This is a great nice way to start our season at home and put some competition under our belt at a (PGA) Tour quality venue,” Dismuke said.
This will be the Cougars’ first competition since finishing in a tie for seventh at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate in Dallas on Oct. 31-Nov. 1. With the team’s return to school on Jan. 17, the Cougars returned to their regular practice schedule on the course and in the weight room. In just a few weeks, Dismuke has been pleased with what he has seen from h is team.
“The guys always come back a little rusty. It’s expected because only we just came through our only time of year with down time,” Dismuke said. “We’re not in midseason form, but we have been working at it. The guys look better every day that they come out, and I expect us to continue to improve over the semester.”
The Cougars won’t announce their starting lineup for this weekend’s event until later this week. Despite the recent wet weather in the area, the Cougars haven’t been adversely affected in their preseason preparations.
“We have only been rained out a couple of times,” Dismuke said. “For the most part, the weather has been very cooperative.”
Following the Redstone Challenge, the Cougars will compete at the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational at Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio, Texas. That two-day, 54-hole event tees off with 36 holes on Feb. 13 and wraps up with the final 18 holes on Feb. 14.
DAVE WILLIAMS GOLF ACADEMY CONSTRUCTION
This weekend’s event is just the latest in an on-going partnership with Redstone Golf Club. In June 2011, officials from the Athletics Department, Redstone Golf Club and the Dave Williams family officially broke ground for the Dave Williams Golf Academy at Redstone Golf Club.
Construction began shortly after and has progressed nicely during the last seven month. Dismuke said he expects construction to be completed within the next 40 to 50 days.
The Academy, which will cost around $500,000 will cover 4,400 square feet and be built on the Redstone Tournament Course driving range.
The Golf Academy will house four indoor/outdoor hitting bays with the latest technology, including a Launch Monitor for players to practice length, dispersion and trajectories of any shot. In addition, a SAM PuttLab will take ultrasound measurements of the putting stroke and displays the information in simple graphic reports. A three-dimensional biomechanical measuring system will help refine the way a player’s body should properly move during a golf swing.
