AMERICAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION RECOGNIZES NORTH CYPRESS MEDICAL CENTER DIABETES PROGRAM

Diabetes is a medical condition that causes a defect in the cells of the pancreas that are responsible for producing insulin. Insulin allows the body’s blood sugar to be absorbed. If not controlled, diabetes can lead to serious health issues.

There are 3 types of diabetes: Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational. Type 1, usually diagnosed in children or young adults, is when the body does not produce insulin. Type 2 is the most common and is when the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin. Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy. Usually the mother and baby’s blood sugar levels return to normal once the baby is born.

North Cypress Medical Center offers an outpatient Self-Management Education Program recognized by the American Diabetes Association. This 2-visit program is administered by a Certified Diabetes Educator and addresses important issues including what it means to be diabetic, coping with diabetes, meal planning, importance of physical activity, monitoring blood glucose, complications, and behavioral goals. A Certified Diabetes Educator works with each patient and their physician to achieve our number one goal- to make living with diabetes less complicated and help improve quality of life for the whole family.
