Best head-to-head GOP candidate against Obama
Just when everyone in the media had all but crowned Mitt Romney as the GOP presumptive nominee, Santorum – the self-proclaimed “Anti-Obama” not “Anti-Romney” candidate – came out Tuesday night with three overwhelming victories. In Minnesota, Santorum got 45% of the vote, with Paul at 27%, Romney in 3rd at 17% and Gingrich at 11%. In Missouri, with 99.6 percent of the precincts reporting, Santorum received 55 percent of the vote, followed by Romney with 25 percent and Ron Paul with 12 percent. Gingrich wasn’t on the ballet. In Colorado, he came in with 40% of the vote to Romney’s 35%, Gingrich’s 13% and Paul’s 12%. When Mitt Romney ran in 2008, he won both Colorado and Minnesota.
While Romney’s camp downplayed last night’s losses since no delegates were officially awarded in Colorado and Minnesota because those causes held “non-binding preference polls” aka “beauty contests,” these three convincing Santorum victories will none the less renew the GOP competition with a sense of hope for the voters who want a candidate who can be a true conservative alternative to Obama.
Speaking in an interview on Fox Tuesday night, Santorum noted that Romney was “Obama light” and did not provide the stark contrast needed to defeat Obama. So many voters have claimed they want the candidate who is able to beat Obama and have been led to believe from various polls that Romney is that candidate. Thanks to the negative campaigns by Gingrich and Romney, they have bloodied each other up enough to send the voters looking for a candidate who won’t have to defend Romneycare or a resignation from Congress. Gingrich and Romney have played right into Obama’s hands, but Santorum may be the actual benefactor of the two GOP frontrunners’ battle.
Jonathan Cheng of the AP reports:
According to a new poll released Tuesday by the Financial Services Institute, a lobbying group on Capitol Hill that says it represents 35,000 independent broker-dealers and financial advisors across the country, anti-Obama sentiment is running at a fever pitch within the money management community.
If a head-to-head Santorum-Obama election were held today, the former Pennsylvania senator would garner 75% of the investment community vote, a landslide outcome that seems to say less about Mr. Santorum’s favorability than it does about the levels of skepticism around Mr. Obama and his policies.
With these three wins, Santorum should be able to raise money to keep his ‘non-Romney money’ campaign afloat. After Saturday’s caucuses in Maine, there won’t be another Republican
election until Arizona and Michigan hold primaries on Feb. 28. Super Tuesday is March 6th, where ten states will weigh in on their GOP favorite.
