March 1 – April 6, 2012
HOUSTON, TX – Joe Aker is an internationally recognized architectural photographer and artist. MultiFaceted – art + architecture will feature both Aker’s architectural documentary photos and his conceptual work. In both of his professional careers, Aker works to push boundaries. To quote the artist, “My personal work over the years has ranged from the landscape to the conceptual, but is always looking beyond the surface for what is most important. I want for a constant state of change and growth within my art and to explore that which is uncomfortable for me or challenging to envision and create.”
Joe Aker’s work has appeared in all the primary architectural publications and includes photographs for internationally renowned clients including Hines, César Pelli, Robert Stern, HOK, Gensler, Kirksey, Rottet Studio, Picard Chilton, and Duda Paine. He was recognized by AIA Houston as Artist of the Year in 2007. Aker grew up in Oklahoma City, has degrees in Marketing and Economics from Central State University in Edmond, Oklahoma, and a degree in Photography from the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York. He opened his own photography studio in Houston in 1978 and continues to operate it today as Aker Imaging. AI Lab is recognized as one of the premier photographic and digital labs in Texas. Aker’s public art commissions include a permanent installation in the Performing Arts Center at Sam Houston State University and his work is featured in the permanent collection of the MFAH.
