HOUSTON ISD – Houston Independent School District police are investigating an incident that occurred today involving a female fifth-grade student who attends White Elementary School (9001 Triola Lane). According to the student, she was walking to school this morning when an African American man with dreadlocks forced her into a black vehicle that the student believes may have been a Honda. According to the student, the man drove her to a nearby home where he touched her in an inappropriate sexual manner. The student reported that the man then drove her back to a street near the White Elementary campus and let her out of the vehicle. A parent another White Elementary student saw the girl on the roadside and noticed that she was in distress. The parent drove the girl to school, where she reported to staff what had happened.
Houston ISD police were immediately notified and soon arrived on campus to begin an investigation in conjunction with the Houston Police Department. The student received medical attention and has met with a counselor. The school principal notified all parents of the incident by phone this morning and the attached letter is being sent home with students this afternoon. Houston ISD police will increase their patrol presence in the area surrounding White throughout the coming days. HISD considers student safety to be a top priority and all appropriate steps are being taken to keep parents and the community informed. Anyone with information about this case is urged to contact police.
Principal Paulette Caston sent a letter home to the parents, advising parents who choose to allow their children to walk to and from school to discuss the following safety tips with their children:
- Students should walk in groups, not alone;
- Students should avoid distractions, such as cell phones, and pay attention to their surroundings;
- Students who are approached by a stranger should run away and seek help from others;
- Students should physically resist and yell for help if anyone tries to force them into a vehicle or a home; and
- Students should immediately report any incident that makes them uncomfortable.
