Event includes panel of experts and presentation on new STAAR exam
HOUSTON ISD – In an effort to familiarize all parents, students and staff with the new state-mandated STAAR exam, the district is hosting a STAAR Info Session tonight, from 6:30 to 8p.m. at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center, 4400 W. 18th Street.
“This new exam is going to be much more rigorous, and the standards set by the state are much higher,” HISD Superintendent Terry Grier said of the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness. “Our goal as a district is to prepare our students for success on this exam, and that requires teamwork from our staff and our parents. The presentation, which is followed by a Q&A session, is a great opportunity for parents to ask questions about STAAR. ”
This information session will provide parents thorough information on STAAR, outlining the chief differences between the previous state exam, TAKS, and STAAR, and providing district-specific information on resources available to students who struggle on STAAR concepts. A panel of STAAR experts will also discuss the latest information about the law requiring schools to count high school students’ scores on STAAR end-of-course exams toward their class grades.
“It is critical that students do their very best and take their performance on each STAAR assessment seriously,” Dr. Grier said. “HISD is striving to provide parents all the information and resources they need to be able to reinforce at home what students are learning at school.”
The panelists will be addressing all questions and concerns from the audience. Translators will also be provided. Questions can be submitted in person during the information session or via e-mail to STAAR@houstonisd.org. The information session will also be broadcast live on HISD-TV (Comcast, Ch. 18 and AT&T U-Verse, Ch. 99) and online at www.houstonisd.org/HISDTV.
