Junior guard collects first weekly award of career

HOUSTON – After leading the Cougars to a win against league co-leader Southern Miss, University of Houston junior guard Jonathon Simmons was honored Monday as the Conference USA Player of the Week.

Simmons poured in a game-high 28 points on 10-of-18 shooting to lead the Cougars to a 73-71 win against Southern Miss last weekend inside Hofheinz Pavilion. The Golden Eagles entered that game ranked at No. 10 in the latest NCAA RPI rankings.

With his point total, Simmons posted his team-leading seventh 20-point game of the season and tied junior forward Kirk Van Slyke for the most points by any Cougar in a game in 2011-12. His total topped his previous high of 26 points at Texas State on Dec. 6, 2011.

Simmons also tied his career best in field goal attempts and field goals in recording his seventh straight game with at least 10 points, the second-longest streak of his career.

The Houston native and Smiley High product finished second among the Cougars against USM with eight rebounds, including three off the offensive glass. His lone 3-pointer of the night at the end of the first half gave the Cougars a 38-27 lead at the break and a huge wave of momentum going into the locker room.
