The Houston Fire Department confirms that disciplinary action was taken against three members regarding an incident in which a racial epithet was entered into an emergency medical record. The discipline was administered following due process for the members. Use of such language as described in the related complaint constitutes a violation of public trust and will not be tolerated by the Houston Fire Department.

CYPRESS, TX -- Art and storytelling blend in “The Storyteller and the Artist,” an interactive story hour in Bridgeland from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays at the Lakeland Activity Center.

Designed for children ages 2 to 5, the remaining sessions for the story hour are: Oct. 5-29, Nov. 2-23 and Nov. 30-21. Cost is $30 for Bridgeland residents and $40 for non-residents.

HOUSTON – 89.3 KSBJ, Houston’s leading independent, non-profit, contemporary Christian music radio station, is a finalist for two industry honors, Religious Station of the Year which will be awarded at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Marconi Radio Awards and Station of the Year by the Christian Music Broadcasters Awards (CMB). CYPRESS, TX -- Area youngsters have already found treasure with a new event in Bridgeland geared especially for children ages 3 to 7 — “Ahoy Yer Mateys,” set for 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sept. 18.


The fun event will help young pirates celebrate International Talk Like a Pirate Day in true buccaneer fashion at the Lakeland Activity Center. Kids can dress up as pirates, learn pirate lingo, go on a treasure hunt and make pirate flags. Cost is $15 for residents and $25 for non-residents.

The Guild Institute in Christian Family Studies at Houston Baptist University has selected Voddie Baucham Jr., HBU alumnus and pastor of preaching at Grace Family Baptist Church in Spring, as speaker for its fall lecture, which will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m. in the Belin Chapel on the HBU campus.

Baucham, who was raised in a non-Christian, single-parent home and did not hear the gospel until he was in college, will speak on “The Fatherless Family.” He will also deliver the weekly Convocation address, “The Lord’s Will vs. My Desires,” at 11 a.m. in Dunham Theater and a special lecture, “Opportunities in Christian Higher Education,” geared for families in the local homeschooling community at 3 p.m. in Belin Chapel. Pepsi announced that two local organizations and individuals are on track to be funded grants through the Pepsi Refresh Project’s Do Good for the Gulf Program.

I Can Impact, Inc. a group that helps abused and abandoned children in Texas, was announced today as a $50,000 grant finalist. I Can Impact, Inc. will use the grant to help Kidz Harbor, a large property on the Chocolate Bayou that serves as a temporary or permanent home to displaced children. I Can Impact, Inc. will team up Kidz Harbor and renovate their property, which was damaged during Hurricane Ike, so that the home will be more comfortable for the children living there.

Houston Christian High School senior Drew Earnest was elected as a "mock" Texas Railroad Commissioner during the week-long American Legion Boy’s State program held in Austin on June 5-11, 2010. Drew executed a successful campaign among his nearly 800 fellow delegates from across the Great State of Texas in order to win his House seat. In addition to being elected to head the railroad commission, Drew was selected as a county delegate and passed the mock state bar exam.

HOUSTON – The Texas Democratic Party filed yet another meritless lawsuit against Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector and Voter Registrar Leo Vasquez in an apparent attempt to intimidate Vasquez from continuing his investigation of the questionable voter registration applications submitted on behalf of a supposed “non-partisan” group, Houston Votes. It has been widely reported that the Advisory Board of Houston Votes is heavily stacked with notable Democrats. Vasquez released the following statement:

Governor's Office of Criminal Justice Grant Funds After-School Programs for At Risk Youth

H.P.A.R.D.’s After School Achievement Program (A.S.A.P.) was awarded an $80,000 State Criminal Justice Planning (421) FundGrant from the Governor’s Office of Criminal Justice on September 1, 2010. This grant funding will allow A.S.A.P. to fund an additional three after school program sites in the area and positively impact at risk students.

3,055 H-E-B Partners salute local heroes at 470 fire stations statewide on Friday, September 10

HOUSTON– H-E-B will honor our nation’s firefighters for their dedication and selfless service with the sixth annual company-wide volunteer program Helping Heroes on Friday, Sept. 10. More than 375 H-E-B Partners (employees) from70 H-E-B stores in greater Houston, as well as warehouse facilities, will visit local fire stations to serve lunch to firefighters and help with around-the-station chores. As part of this program, H-E-B will adopt 128 fire stations throughout the city.

HOUSTON, TX –Children need a lot of supplies when they go back to school. From pens, pencils and crayons, to paper, erasers and backpacks, the Auxiliary at Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital recently donated dozens of these items and other necessities to Cypress Assistance Ministries (CAM) to help area children as they head back to the classroom. This is the second year the hospital Auxiliary has donated school supplies to CAM as part of their commitment to education. The Auxiliary also uses gift shop proceeds to award scholarships to deserving high school students pursuing careers in health care.
