A close friend of mine called me the other morning and asked me to pray for him. The problem that he was having was that his mind was all over the place and not on what it needed to be. He described what I call ‘shot-gun’ thoughts. This is when your mind is blasting off in many directions at once and focus is nearly impossible.
As I prayed for him, I prayed that he would not have shot gun thoughts, and instead have ‘sniper thoughts’ with pinpoint focal accuracy. I know how important it is, especially for those going to school, college, and for those business men and women, to be able to quickly find the focus, to plan for a productive day.
When we had finished praying, I shared with him about how I read a verse or two first things in the morning. When I wake up, I turn to my left, grab my bible and open up to the book of Psalms or Proverbs. Why? Because there’s a biblical principal that says, when you read the word of God, your mind goes through a good scrub.
Reading the Word gives you a good washing.
Ephesians 5:27, is talking to a husband; he is told the importance of applying the word into his marriage, but in this verse there is a key thought, a principal, like a spiritual scientific law. It reads: “…cleansing her by the washing with water through the word.” When we apply the scripture to our minds, first thing in the morning, we are actually giving our minds a good scrub.
Just as it is important to wake up, get a shower, brush your teeth, (and for me a good cup of coffee) it is just as important, even more so, to start the day off with a fresh mental attitude.
Just try it and see how much more productive your day is, and what kind of spiritual, emotional, and mental encouragement it gives.
